Tumour of the optic chiasma.
Tumours arising in the small area at the base of the brain between the optic chiasma and cerebral peduncles are common and include meningiomas, suprasellar and pituitary neoplasms, aneurysm of the circle of Willis, and chiasmal arachnoiditis with cyst formation. Tumours arising in the optic chiasma and nerve sheaths, however, are very uncommon. In all these conditions, visual symptoms may obtru...
متن کاملGlioma of Chiasma and Optic Nerve.
IN a case of orbital optic nerve glioma without intracranial extension, Davis (1940) removed the tumour through a skin incision at the lower orbital margin, cutting the optic nerve near the apex of the orbit and behind the globe and thus retaining the eye. Verhoeff (1922) found that, even when the tumour was partially removed by the orbital route leaving some intracranial portion, no orbital re...
متن کاملThe anatomy of the optic chiasma and heteronymous hemianopia.
The gross anatomy of the optic nerves and chiasma has been studied, and differences in the tension in the crossed and uncrossed fibres after chiasmal displacement have been investigated. The anterior and posterior attachments of the medial and lateral fibres of the nerves have been studied. The chiasma has been dissected under low power microscopy and a three dimensional picture of it developed...
متن کاملEffect of scuba-diving on optic nerve and sheath diameters
Background :There is not any data available about the effect of high bar pressure condition on intracranial pressure. In this study, the effect of diving on the optic nerve and sheath diameters as non-invasive markers of intracranial pressure has been investigated. Methods : Twenty professional male divers from twenty one volunteers were chosen for this cross-sectional study. Only one perso...
متن کاملOptic nerve metastasis from a mediastinal carcinoid tumour.
A 25-year-old man with a rapidly progressive metastatic carcinoid tumour arising in the mediastinum developed a metastasis to the optic nerve. This is the first instance in the literature of an ocular metastasis from this variant of carcinoid tumour. The ocular pathology, ultrastructure, and recent information on the derivation of this tumour, believed to originate in the thymus, are presented.
